We’ve seen vlogs of you doing kung-fu or workouts in your hotel room; is this generally how you stay in shape?

Yes, but I also do yoga, which has been influenced by my wife Gina Turner. I’m on a constant fitness diet as well.

Your shows are high energy, so presumably staying fit is very important to you?

Absolutely, but it’s more because of my schedule, which is always so busy. The only way you can survive and be back on email on Monday and produce music is to live healthy. I also teach at my teacher’s kung-fu school. I have the responsibility as the highest student in the school, to try and set a good example.

Are you happy with your body?

The last couple of months I’ve been lowering my fat percentage and right now I’m  on the right path! I dropped from 17% to 9%, which I never thought was possible before. A heavier version of Bruce Lee would be ideal : )

Is being fit and active on stage part of the laidback Luke package?

Only when it comes to the energy and inspiration I can deliver to a performance. Mind you, I’ve been DJing for 20 years now, so I’ve known times that I was DJing with a hangover when my sets weren’t very inspirational.

Do you try and book hotels with gyms, and or you just as happy working out in your room?

Both! What I often do is switch workouts. This is more beneficial. I’m a big fan of bodyweight workouts, but I’ll occasionally grab the weights in the gym, too.

Do you have a PT/coach?

Once a month I have my kung-fu teacher with me on tour. He is the one that made me into the fit person I am now. A lot of workouts I’ve picked up from working out with several other people when it comes to yoga and fitness. Online is a big help too. If you need a workout on a certain body area, you can just Google it. Simple.

Do you ever go running when out and about? You musty stay in some nice places, coastal etc.

Yes absolutely! But to be honest, I prefer running on the treadmill. I love seeing all the stats. I will also run towards a certain goal every few minutes, which I can only intensify on treadmills. I do run outside too, I love running. I never run more than 20 minutes, though.

How do you plan your workouts around your schedule?

One of the big rules I have is to train whenever I land in a new destination. Nothing is better than getting your body moving after a day of travel. Within the travel, I often finish my new tracks. My new track with Twoloud ‘Fcukin Beats’, which is out now, was made in airplanes and hotel rooms!

How do you combat jet lag?

I don’t anymore. I often just stay on American time. Even though I still live in the Netherlands!

You seem to love a Starbucks…. what are you other guilty pleasures?

My other guilty pleasures are chocolate and fries. I love counting calories and in that sense it’s quite easy to eat well on tour. I deliberately didn’t say drinking because all I drink is water and tea. Every product has the info you need on the back, including the amount of calories and macros, so you can stick to a plan easily.

How do you relax?

The best way to relax is to keep your calm in your brain. You can make something as difficult and stressful as you want. It’s all up to you! I choose to have a calm brain. Doing things that I love make me relaxed. Luckily, I love everything I do!

Where’s your favourite place to work/tour?

No place in particular but man, I love being home! I’m never really home for more than four days at a time. Touring this much has made me realize how much of a luxury it is being home. Any of you reading this at home: I hope you realize I’m jealous of you!

What’s next for you?

In the VLOG we have been experimenting with 360-degree video, which has been big. I’ve been vlogging for a year now and I can safely say that shooting and editing video has become my big hobby. I do all my tour travel VLOGs by myself, so have a look! Don’t forget to check out my new dancefloor single ‘Fcukin’ Beats’, which might be perfect for your next workout!

What’s the key to becoming successful in this industry?

The key to becoming successful is to consider that at least 50% of your success depends on other people giving you a chance. In that case, make sure you connect to a lot of people and always behave nicely towards them. Even if you’re getting a bad vibe or bad critics, try and learn from them and grow. Another key is to never give up and keep believing in yourself. Giving up is never an option when it comes to realizing your dream. There’s always hope, no matter how small. But that will all disappear if you give up.
